One hour drive from Krakow. We visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau
concentration camp, the site of the most horrific genocide in human
history. It is shocking how human beings can become so cruel in the
madness of war. Although Hitler’s policy of discrimination against
Jews was at the root of the massacre, many ordinary people were also
involved in the execution of the plan. This is the nature of human
existence. The Russian army, which succeeded the Soviet army that
liberated Auschwitz, is now killing innocent civilians in the
neighboring Ukraine every day. It makes me wonder what humanity has
learned from history.
