クラクフはワルシャワ以前にポーランドの首都だった歴史ある町だ。映画「シンドラーのリスト」の舞台になった場所でもある。いま市内の至る所にウクライナの国旗が飾られ窮地の隣国への連帯を示すと同時に大量の避難民を受け入れてもいる。実はかつてここポーランド南東部とウクライナ西部は「ガリツィア」と呼ばれた一つの地域で国家として存立したこともあったという。欧州とロシアが綱引きをするウクライナの歴史がひじょうに複雑な所以の一つがここにもある。
Krakow is a historic city that was the capital of Poland before
Warsaw. It was also the setting for the movie “Schindler’s List”.
Today, Ukrainian flags are displayed throughout the city to show
solidarity with the distressed neighboring country, while at the same
time welcoming large numbers of displaced people. In fact,
southeastern Poland and western Ukraine once existed as a single state
in a region called “Galicia”. This is one of the reasons why the
history of Ukraine, where Europe and Russia are engaged in a
tug-of-war, is so complicated.
