A small service was being held in the evening at the cathedral with
its beautiful frescoes of the Virgin and Child. The solemn prayers and
songs of the Orthodox Church, which cherishes the liturgy, echoed
through the dimly lit cathedral. As I gazed at the people praying for
the coming of the Savior in the midst of war, I was reminded of the
words of a painter who had left a legacy. “Human beings are most
beautiful when they are praying.”
