The art of pottery born from 400 years of history. The ultimate beauty of Satsuma-yaki, overcoming the conflicts between tradition and father.
Delicate and pretty decorations on a milky white base. The milky white base and delicate, pretty decorations are the work of “Shen Juguan,” a representative of Satsuma ware, which has been handed down in Kagoshima for many years. The roots of the Shen family go back to the Korean Peninsula more than 400 years ago. Over the course of 15 generations in a foreign land, the family overcame many hardships and pursued the ultimate in beauty. At the end of the Edo period, their works blossomed in Paris and became known worldwide as “SATSUMA. In this film, we will see the exhibition of the successive generations of Chinjugan in Paris, where he took up the challenge of “conveying the essence of Satsuma ware to the world,” and the friction with his father that followed. What does it mean to “pass the generations” in the world of tradition? Praying to the earth, fearing the fire. This is a 10-year documentary of Shen Juguan XV, a potter who continues to innovate while preserving his history.
