It is not widely known that there used to be a huge Japanese military command bunker underneath Shuri Castle, which burned down on October 31, 2020. There is a man who has been researching this bunker for over 20 years. He is Sadamitsu Ushijima, the grandson of Lieutenant General Mitsuru Ushijima, the commander-in-chief of the Japanese Army at the time of the Battle of Okinawa. Mr. Ushijima has been pained by his grandfather’s decision to withdraw from the southern part of the island, which resulted in many civilian casualties. We followed his activities in Okinawa, where there are growing calls to open the command bunker to the public along with the reconstruction of Shuri Castle.
